Thee Blog

This is the blog that caught the attention of L.A. Times and I was even contacted by People Magazine.  (Although that never went far, someone there wanted to hear from me.  How awesome is that?)

I am reposting it here because people kept asking for the whole blog instead of just the quotes.

This blog was written in 2006 and posted on myspace, when people were protesting HR 4437.

Do’s & Don’ts for High School Students planning on participating in the walkout March 27th!!!
Category: News and Politics

I usually don’t condone high school walkouts because I feel students should prove that they WANT their education and better themselves by staying in school, BUT some of you are going to do it anyway, so here’s the DO’s & DON’Ts for the walkout:

DO walkout if:

1. You are going to keep it peaceful. The last thing we need is you making the rest of the Latinos look bad by carrying out violent acts. We did it yesterday with 500,000 people! We did it, you can, too!!!!

2. You understand HR 4437. Do your research and build your case, the last thing we need is a student not knowing why they are out of school. If you don’t understand it, then you obviously NEED your education and don’t belong on the walkout anyway.

3. You want to make a difference. Yesterday, I was standing next to some chick who was worried more about her makeup than hearing the Mayor speak about HR 4437. She broke out with her mirror and THEN had the nerve to ask for an autograph from a guest speaker DURING the presentation. If that’s not rude, what is? She should have stayed home.

4. You believe you are standing for your rights and the rights of your parents, your neighbors, and hard working Latinos everywhere.

Do NOT walkout out if:

1. You are going to forget about it the next day. You need to spread your knowledge and empower your people, la gente, and let them know, you are here for them to support your gente.

2. You’re a homie. What kind of hipocritical message are you sending, fighting amongst your idiot selves while telling the government you are united? You’re basically proving them right thinking you’re an idiot.

3. You just want to ditch school. Please. Save yourself the embarrassment of stupidity.

*********************************

Most of the jobs that I have ever had have been where I’m usually the only Latina in the company. I always worked hard to get further in my career and education. I’m still in school now, and plan to get up in the political mix in 2010, when I run for Mayor of Oxnard. Think like the white people. In retrospect, I’ve also met many who have an education and are nowhere.

Use your education to better your people. Don’t feel sorry for yourself. If you are the son or daughter of immigrants, remember that so am I and most likely, so are most first generation Latinos. Mayor Villaraigosa is also the son of immigrants, and look at how he is using his political power to influence other politicians. My parents struggled a lot to come to the US for me to be able to say they are citizens. I proudly am American, but I use the American system to help better la gente.

If you walktout tomorrow, STAND PROUD, STAND PEACEFUL, but most importantly, STAND UNITED!!!!!!!

Si se puede!
